In Sri Lanka, drinking water supplying system is now under construction to expand the distribution area, although, domestic wastewater treatment facilities are little to be installed and water environment is facing a risk. Sri Lanka government has announced several near future development projects for the Nuwara Eliya cable car, Lake Gregory theme park, and Kandy tourism and cultural center. Therefore, there is a need to promote the investment for the infrastructures as well as the domestic wastewater treatment facilities in order to keep attracting the overseas tourists.
Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1952, Sri Lanka and Japan have developed a friendly relationship in a wide range of fields, including politics, diplomacy, economy and culture. The year 2024 marked the 72th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Based upon this situation, Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan (MOEJ) and Ministry Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development (MWS) will hold this seminar to discuss the promotion of decentralized domestic wastewater management to improve the water environment in Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lanka side will provide information on the current status and challenges of decentralized domestic wastewater management, and the Japanese side will provide information on the system of decentralized domestic wastewater management by Johkasou as case in Japan. In the discussion session, it is expected to discuss how to promote the appropriate development of the decentralized domestic wastewater treatment facilities in Sri Lanka. Through this seminar, it is expected that efforts to improve the effectiveness of decentralized domestic wastewater management in Sri Lanka will be promoted in near future.
